Classes that I offer

SCIENCE AND NATURE Ages 2-5 $135
Spring is the perfect season for this class in which we will hatch and raise silkworms, create an ant farm, and dig for earthworms for our earthworm observatory. We'll also play with magnets, balloons, bubbles, a baking soda and vinegar volcano, slime, a stomp rocket, and lots more surprises. One day we'll take a field trip to explore the flora and fauna at a nearby creek. This class is messy, fun, exciting, and very hands-on.

ART CLASS ages 1-3 $135

Inspired by the book Young at Art by Susan Stryker, this class is a chance for toddlers to have early art experiences that are messy, fun, and tactile. COOKING
ages 1-3 OR ages 3-6
Using the wonderful cookbooks Pretend Soup and Salad People, we'll be cooking blueberry pancakes, pizza, zucchini moons and more. Toddlers love to mix, measure, and pour so there'll be plenty of that, along with food-inspired art projects, story time, and samples of new foods like coconut, star fruit, and nori.
Origami books! Pop up books! Instant books! And more much more! Inspired by Esther K. Smith's How to Make Books and her latest, Magic Books and Paper Toys, we'll be making flexagons, homemade paper, pop-up books, and books like this and this, along with printmaking and a non-toxic marbling technique. Of course lots of writing and illustrating are on the agenda... and we'll take a look at Artist to Artist: 23 Major Illustrators Talk to Children About Their Art to contemplate how some of our favorite illustrators make the magic happen. Comic books, secret diaries, love notes, mystery novels.... the sky's the limit!

GIFT-MAKING FOR THE HOLIDAYS $150 Take the focus off zealous over-consumption this holiday season by getting your kid excited about homemade gifts! Let me tell you about myself...

I started working as a babysitter at age 12, became a nanny at the age of 19, and have worked with children off and on all through my twenties. I worked at a day care at a church and at Hyde Park Montessori. About four years ago I started running a very small Mother's Day Out program from my home. I became inspired to teach an art class for toddlers after reading Susan Stryker's book, Young at Art, and I've just been expanding my repetoire of classes from there. I have been teaching classes in art, nature, science, tinkering, carpentry, and more for the last two years.
I've taken classes with Carrie Contey, Kirsten Nottleson of Hand in Hand workshops, and Donna Bryan Goetz of Austin Montessori. I'm a voracious learner and am constantly seeking out guidance and inspiration in the field of parenting and working with children. I have three children myself (Jack, 6, Bruno, 3, and Henrietta, 18 months) and I'm always striving to be the best parent and teacher I can be.
